Moss Wall vs. Living Wall: What to Choose for Your Office

Both solutions look beautiful — but they work in completely different ways. Find out which is right for your space, budget and maintenance requirements.

Moss wall in an office

The fundamental difference

A living green wall contains real living plants in substrate or hydroponics. It grows, breathes, filters the air and changes with the seasons. It requires regular care, irrigation and light.

A moss wall (stabilised) is made from natural moss or grass that has undergone glycerine preservation. It retains its natural appearance, shape and texture but requires no care — no watering, no lighting, no fertilising.

Comparison — 7 key criteria

1. Care and maintenance

Living wall: Regular gardener care 2–4x per month. Automated or manual irrigation. Replacing dead plants, fertilising, pruning. Without care, the wall deteriorates within 3 months.

Moss wall: Zero maintenance. Dust off once a year. Room humidity 40–60% (standard office environment). Direct sunlight shortens lifespan — ideal for interiors without direct sun.

2. Acquisition cost

Living wall: 3,000–8,000 CZK/m² + irrigation system (one-off 5,000–15,000 CZK).

Moss wall: 2,500–7,000 CZK/m² (depends on moss type and design complexity). Installation 1,500–3,000 CZK.

3. Running costs

Living wall: 500–1,500 CZK/m²/month (gardener + water + fertilisers).

Moss wall: 0 CZK/month.

4. Air quality effect

Living wall: Actively filters air, increases humidity, produces oxygen. Measurable air quality improvement at sufficient scale.

Moss wall: No active effect on air (plants are preserved). Aesthetic and acoustic benefits only.

5. Acoustics

Both solutions have a similar acoustic effect — sound absorption through natural textures. A dense moss wall can actually be acoustically more effective than a sparse living wall.

6. Lifespan

Living wall: Theoretically unlimited with proper care. Practically 5–10 years without major renovation.

Moss wall: 5–10 years under standard conditions (humidity, no direct sun).

7. Aesthetics and flexibility

Living wall: Dynamic, changes, grows. Can combine species, colours and textures. Seasonal changes are part of the appeal.

Moss wall: Static, consistent, predictable. Easier to execute a specific design intent — colours and shapes do not change.

Combining both

The most effective solution combines both — a living wall in a well-lit space, moss or stabilised greenery in darker areas and corridors. Verdino designs comprehensive solutions for entire offices. Request a consultation or read more about types of green walls.
