Green Wall in the Office: Cost, Types and How to Get Started

A green wall is the most visually powerful element of biophilic design. Which type should you choose, what does it cost, and what does ongoing operation involve?

Living wall vs. stabilised wall: the basic difference

Green walls fall into two main categories. A living (vertical) garden contains real plants in substrate or hydroponics and actively grows — it requires irrigation, light and regular maintenance. A stabilised wall uses preserved plants or moss that have undergone a special glycerine preservation process — they require no watering or light, but they also no longer grow.

How it works

A living wall consists of modular systems (pockets, panels, frames) planted with plants. Plants are irrigated automatically or by hand. Adequate lighting is essential — natural or specialist LED. Professional care includes pruning, fertilising and replacing dead specimens.

Suitable plants

Pothos, philodendron, fern, bromeliads, fittonia, sansevieria or chamaedorea — always based on light conditions and the irrigation system.

Stabilised green wall (moss or plant)

How it works

Plants or moss are chemically treated so they remain natural-looking and vibrant but require no care. Installed like a picture or panel on the wall. Lifespan 5–10 years if conditions are maintained (room humidity 40–60%; direct sunlight shortens lifespan).
